The Red Egg and Ginger Party tradition began long ago in ancient China to celebrate the birth of each new baby, and introduce him or her to the family and friends. Traditionally held when the baby turned one month old, the baby's name was announced for the first time at the party. (Since mortality rates were so high for infants, a baby reaching one month was considered likely to survive.)
